In the summer of 2013, Ryan Holck’s world changed. While attending the Echo Conference in Dallas, Texas, Gary Molander posed a simple question during his keynote talk…
“What if you put fear in the trunk and take it for a ride?”
The implications of this simple question challenged Ryan. After 17 years of faith-based nonprofit work, he wondered if he could have a greater impact working outside the church than inside.
The next spring, Ryan resigned from his full-time marketing and communications role to launch RAD Ideas. Through RAD Ideas, Ryan has served 100+ organizations with consulting, marketing strategy, and design.
But with each organization served a pattern emerged. The organizations that could clearly share their story were thriving, sustainable, and growing. The ones who lacked clarity in their messaging struggled to raise funds and keep the doors open.
Their success didn’t come down to the size of the mission or the solution they provided. It came down to how clearly they could communicate their impact with supporters.
But many leaders struggled to know what details were important and how to share them. They needed a repeatable process to help.
The Distill Your Story framework was born. This three-part process helps an organization:

- Simplicity – Simplify your messaging into stories that engage people and grow donations
- Strategy – Map a marketing plan for sharing your story with your supporters both online and in-person
